Paolini sprints to stage victory
Luca Paolini won stage three of the Tour of Britain from Leeds to Sheffield, holding off a brave challenge from UK rider Russel Downing.

National road champion Downing was in the lead group on the descent into his home city but lost vital ground on Paolini when he overshot the last bend.

German Brian Schmitz of T-Mobile stormed through to take second.

But Ireland's Roger Aitken, along with the Irish team boss, was disqualified for holding on to the team vehicle.

Paolini's win puts him in the green points jersey while team-mate Belgian Nick Nuyens retains the yellow jersey.

New Wales national coach Julian Winn took the polka-dot jersey after winning all four climbs on the 167.5km stage.

Downing, 26, admitted he was disappointed not to take the victory.

"It's the stage I wanted to win with it being my home town," he said.

"But it's the toughest one and it doesn't make it easier, training on those roads every week."
