Fulham Football Club's spiritual home of Craven Cottage overlooks the Fulham bend.

It offers the crew on the side of the river closest to the football ground - the Middlesex station - an advantage of approximately half a boat length, if they make the most of it.

Occurring early in the race, it is tactically very significant because the Middlesex crew will face a significant disadvantage round the much larger Hammersmith bend after a further three or four minutes' racing.

Being aware of this, the crew on the opposite side - the Surrey station - will try and neutralise the effects of the bend by a combination of racing spurts and forceful steering.

In recent years there have been a number of oar clashes around this point.

How to get there:
Tube: Parsons Green, Putney Bridge (District)
Buses: 74, 220, 424, 430
