Under-performing Worcester Wolves frustrate Paul James

Worcester Wolves head coach Paul James says his big players must start producing their best form after a lacklustre start to the new BBL season.

Wolves lost their BBL Cup quarter-final tie to Newcastle 105-76 on Friday and are currently seventh in the league.

"The well is almost dry as far as my positivity towards them," James told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"I've been trying to get them to play and I have given them every opportunity to become part of the team."

He added: "If that doesn't work, I will have to find another way. I will basically be less tolerant in training."

James has singled out new signings Justin Dobbins and Alex Zimnickas and last year's successes Kastytis Normantas and Rod Middleton after his Wolves side were comprehensively beaten by the Eagles.

It was Worcester's heaviest defeat since James took charge last year.

I'm not even sure if I can motivate players

"We've got guys who just aren't in form right now which is very concerning," he added. "We've just got to try and stress the things we aren't doing well at the moment but not give them too much pressure where they totally clam up and shut down.

"Daniel Gilbert has been doing very well. He's probably the only guy playing at the top of his game right now.

"There's only only so much motivation you can do as a coach and actually I'm not even sure if I can motivate players. It's about personal gratification and doing well as an individual.

"We've got one or two players who I'd like to be more self-motivated and I wouldn't have to push them as much."

The Wolves face the Mersey Tigers on Saturday, who have lost just one game all season.

James believes the recent signing of Great Britain international shooting guard Nate Reinkin will give the Tigers a big boost.

"They are just going to be on another level, which is a bit concerning," he said. "But we have to do things to disrupt their flow and make it an ugly game and give us a chance of winning it."
