Robertson & Emms reach last four
Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson in action
Emms and Robertson missed last year's World Championships
Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms powered into the mixed doubles semi-finals of the World Championships in Madrid.

The Commonwealth champions took just over half an hour to beat Danes Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Juhl 21-14 21-17.

Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg joined their English compatriots in the last four, beating China's Olympic champions Zhang Jun and Gao Ling 21-18 21-17.

Clark also advanced to the men's doubles with Robert Blair but Tracey Hallam went out of the women's singles.

All of England's semi-finalists are guaranteed bronze medals, which means the team will bring back their finest world championship haul in 23 years.

Blair and Clark upset Indonesia's Hendra Setiawan and Markus Kido 15-21 21-16 21-17 while Hallam lost 22-20 10-21 10-21 to China's Olympic champion Zhang Ning.

Clark and Kellogg scored the best win of their career in the mixed doubles over the third seeds and double Olympic champions.

Kellogg said: "It's not quite sunk in but it's one of the best performances of our career."

Hallam, the Commonwealth champion, took the first game in her quarter-final, but an ankle injury disrupted her momentum.

"I am pleased to have taken a set off her but it all went a bit downhill after that as she stepped up a gear," Hallam said.

Robertson and Emms are looking to make up for disappointment of last year, when Robertson was injured on the eve of the World Championships in Anaheim, California.

"Anaheim still motivates me," he said. "We were the best pair in the world going into that tournament.

"It was not nice being in LA watching someone else win the world title when you know you are the best pair."
