NFL passing great Favre retires

Green Bay Packers star Brett Favre
Favre is a guaranteed future NFL Hall of Famer

Record-breaking quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire after 17 seasons in the NFL.

Last season the Green Bay Packers star became the all-time leader in passing yards (61,655), touchdown passes (442) and career wins (160).

But the year ended on a low as Green Bay lost the NFC title game to eventual Super Bowl winners the New York Giants.

Favre, 38, starred as the Packers beat New England in Super Bowl XXXI at the end of the 1996 season.

After one of his best seasons ever in 2007, he was voted to his ninth Pro Bowl but pulled out of the February game for unspecified reasons.

"He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the league," said Packers general manager Ted Thompson.

"He is able to walk away from the game on his own terms - not many players are able to do that."
