Brit Tynes eyes Wembley NFL date
Lawrence Tynes
The Giants feel Tynes has what it takes to fill the gap left by Feely
British NFL kicker Lawrence Tynes could feature in October's NFL game in London after being traded by Kansas City.

The 29-year-old Scot has been signed by the New York Giants, who face the Miami Dolphins at Wembley later this year.

Tynes played in 48 regular season games and one play-off contest in three seasons (2004-06) with the Chiefs.

He became a restricted free agent in March but was unable to agree a new long-term deal at Arrowhead Stadium, signalling his likely departure.

The Giants lost their kicker in the offseason when Jay Feely signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent.

Until the Tynes trade, they had only rookies Josh Huston and Marc Hickok on their roster. Hickok was released after his signing was confirmed.

This is a playoff-ready team. I think I bring some experience - I've kicked game winners and played in big games

"Tynes is a veteran who has kicked in some big games," said Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. "He has made some long field goals.

"We're not bringing him in to give him the job - he has to earn it. We feel like we have a strong young guy versus a veteran kicker and the best kicker is going to win the job.

"We wanted a guy to come in here and put pressure on (Huston), who we really like. He has a really strong leg, but we feel better about having a guy that's kicked in the league to come in and compete for the job."

Jeff Feagles, the veteran punter who serves as the Giants' holder, said: "Everybody needs competition - you just can't hand a job to somebody, they have to earn it.

"Those two will battle. Lawrence has the game experience in the NFL and has dealt with the mental part of it. But they are both good kickers."

Greenock-born Tynes played 10 NFL Europe games for the Scottish Claymores in 2002 before joining the Chiefs and has also played for Ottawa in the Canadian League.
