O'Connor turns down award
Cian O'Connor
Cian O'Connor won Ireland's only gold medal at the Athens Olympics
Showjumping gold medal winner Cian O'Connor has decided not to accept the Irish Person of the Year award because his horse has failed a drugs test.

The 24-year-old was to have received the award on Saturday night from organisers ESB/Rehab.

O'Connor's horse Waterford Crystal tested positive for a prohibited substance but the rider has said he won his gold medal fairly.

ESB/Rehab said they respected O'Connor's decision about the award.

"We also note his unequivocal assertion that he is innocent of any impropriety," they added.

The Equestrian Federation of Ireland has requested that the 'B' sample taken from the horse should now be tested.

If that is also positive, the person responsible must provide an explanation within 10 days.
