Bullets edge out Riders

Birmingham Bullets opened their BBL Championship campaign with a thrilling 84-83 victory over Midlands rivals Leicester Riders.

BBL newcomer Deginald Erskin to make the winning basket with nine seconds remaining.

Leicester still had the chance to rescue the victory, but Joel Burns' buzzer-beater from 17 feet rimmed out to hand the Bullets victory.

The Riders had clawed their way back from a disappointing opening quarter to get to within three points at 49-52 going into the second half.

An 11-2 Leicester run at the start of the third put the home team ahead 61-54 before the thrilling conclusion to the game.

Erskin led all scorers bagging a highly impressive 30-point haul for the Bullets, while Burns led the Riders scoring with 21.

In Saturday's other games, London Towers claimed an 88-81 victory over the Thames Valley Tigers.

Rod Brown led the Towers scoring with 24 points for the home side, but it was Tigers player Josh Murray who led all scorers by bagging 25.

Kularoo Plymouth Raiders opened their inaugral BBL campaign with an impressive 63-46 victory over Milton Keynes Lions.

Ryan French top scored for the Raiders with 18 points for the Raiders, while BBL newcomer Brett Longpre led all scorers with 20 points for the visitors.
