Straddling the final bend of the course, the Railway Bridge was first opened in 1849, but it was substantially extended between 1891 and 1895.
This is the steepest bend on the course, and the harder of the two bridges for the coxes to steer correctly should the crews still be overlapping at this point.
Historically, this happens infrequently because the requirement to sprint tactically in the early stages of the race has usually taken its toll before the crews reach the final bend.
However, the sophisticated training of the oarsmen and the closely-matched crews of recent years increases the prospect of the Middlesex crew making full use of the half-length advantage offered by this final bend.
