Newmarket salutes Millenary
Millenary, red and white cap, challenges the front at Newmarket
Millenary, red and white cap, aims for the front
Millenary was a comfortable winner of the Sagitta Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on Friday - despite a 5lb weight penalty.

The John Dunlop horse romped home at 11-4, ahead of Sandmason and Holding Court.

The favourite, Henry Cecil's Wellbeing finished fourth.

After winning the St Leger as a three-year-old last year, Millenary showed he is a force to be reckoned with as a four-year-old.

Jockey Pat Eddery hit the front with two furlongs to go and had an easy run-in, winning by three lengths despite a challenge from Sandmason.

Millenary is now set to be entered for the Coronation Cup at Epsom.

Trainer Dunlop said afterwards: "Millenary has a lovely character and is a good ride.

"I think he will get round Epsom better than most horses."

Hughes ban

Jockey Richard Hughes, riding Salford Express, was found guilty of interference of a minor nature when impeding Holding Court near the start.

The offence brought a three-day ban from the Newmarket stewards and invoked a further four-day suspension which was deferred by the disciplinary committee last summer.

Hughes' ban runs from 14-22 May and will see him miss York's Dante meeting.

Friday marked the start of the three-day Guineas meeting at Newmarket, which on Saturday and Sunday will feature the 2000 and 1000 Guineas.
