Chester win Uni-ball Trophy
Chester v Newcastle
Chester best Newcastle to claim their first ever trophy
Chester 92-81 Newcastle

The Chester Jets have beaten the Newcastle Eagles to win the Uni-ball Trophy final at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

Pero Cameron, the Jets' captain, was named most valuable player for a 20-point, nine-rebound performance that lifted his side to its first-ever title.

But Loren Meyer - a former NBA centre - was also a tower of strength for the winning team.

Chester had struggled against Newcastle's zone defence in the first quarter and allowed the Jets to make a 14-2 run.

In the second quarter, however, a three-pointer from Chester's Joe Daughrity ignited the Chester offence.

Inspired by Meyer - who had 11 first-half points and eight rebounds - the Jets soon sped away to a 49-37 half-time lead.

The big man piled further misery on the Eagles in the third quarter.

No way back for Eagles

Just as Newcastle had hauled themselves back into contention to trail 56-49, Meyer hit successive three-pointers to restore a 13-point lead for his team.

That was the kind of night it was for the Eagles.

They could never quite catch a determined Chester side.

Newcastle closed the gap to 69-66 in the fourth quarter, before Daughrity again responded for Chester with a three.

Nursing an 84-74 lead with 78 seconds remaining, Chester got the final break they needed when T J Walker threw the ball away on a crucial Eagles' possession.

It was left to Meyer, with four free throws and a dunk on the buzzer, to complete his personal haul of 26 points and nine rebounds, as the Chester players and fans celebrated their first title in club history.
