Fischer claims eighth gold
Birgit Fischer
Birgit Fischer has won her eighth Olympic gold after guiding her German crew to victory in the women's K4 500m.

Hungary secured the silver medal and Ukraine took the bronze.

The 42-year-old canoeist, who started the gold collection 24 years ago when she won the K1 500m in Moscow, was delighted with her epic achievement.

"It always makes you happy to win a medal, but I haven't realised yet that I've got it. The eighth gold medal has been extremely motivating," she said.

But the German just missed out on picking up a ninth title in Saturday's women's K2 500m final.

Fischer and Carolin Leonhardt were beaten into second place by Hungarian duo Katalin Kovacs and Natasa Janics.

That loss means Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina remains alone at the top all-time female Olympic gold medal winners' list.
