Olsson leaps to Athens gold
Christian Olsson
Sweden's Christian Olsson has won the men's Olympic triple jump competition.

Olsson produced a second-round leap of 17.79m to claim gold ahead of Romania's Marian Oprea who took silver and bronze medallist Danila Burkenya of Russia.

Oprea jumped to 17.55m while Burkenya took third by just a centimetre, at the expense of Cuba's Yoandri Betanzos, with his effort of 17.48m.

Britain's Phillips Idowu did not make the latter stages of the final after failing with his first three attempts.

Idowu took his second jump again after a protest, but the retake was in vain when he fouled yet again.

The 25-year-old could not hide his disappointment after bowing out.

"I felt really good in the warm ups. But in the end it was little no jumps," the Briton told BBC Sport.

"There was a little controversy with one of the no jumps but they'd already raked it through so they couldn't measure it.

"For my last attempt I moved the run-up marker back, but ended up taken off with wrong foot.

"I tried my best to relax because I knew if I stayed relaxed it wouldn't take much for me to make a big leap."
