Britain's women broke the national and Commonwealth record in the 4x200m freestyle relay to win silver at the European Championships in Eindhoven.

A new quartet of Jo Jackson, Mel Marshall, Ellen Gandy and Caitlin McClatchey took nearly five seconds off Britain's previous best time.

Meanwhile, David Davies was second- fastest qualifier for Saturday's final of the men's 1500m freestyle.

And Kirsty Balfour eased into the women's 200m breaststroke final.

McClatchey produced the fastest-ever split by a British woman of one minute 56.19 seconds to move the relay squad up from fourth to contention for the gold at the touch for the finish.

"We worked very hard and put ourselves right up there on the podium. Sometimes we haven't fulfilled our potential but we certainly did that," she said.

Reporting from Eindhoven, BBC Radio 5 Live's Bob Ballard described McClatchey's performance as "blistering" which should put her in a strong frame of mind ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August.

"We're all so proud of what we've achieved," said Jackson after the race.

"We're still in training but we all went out there to do our best and we did a fantastic job to take the silver in such a fast time."

David Davies is among the British athletes who BBC Sport will be following during the countdown to the Beijing Olympics.
