Fell claims World Cup gold for GB

Modern Pentathlon

Heather Fell rounded off an impressive weekend for British modern pentathlon by winning gold in round three of the World Cup at Millfield.

The 25-year-old produced a strong cross country run to clinch her first World Cup win and her second World Cup medal.

"I went into the competition hoping for a top-eight finish so to win it was great," said Fell, who is from Devon.

On Saturday, Sam Weale won bronze for Great Britain in the men's final - his first World Cup medal.

Weale's team-mate Nick Woodbridge finished eighth as both men earned valuable ranking points to increase their chances of qualifying for the Olympics in August.

Britain has not been represented in the men's modern pentathlon event at the Olympics since 1996.

The women's team have already clinched the maximum two qualification spots for Beijing, but face an internal selection battle to decide who will take up the places.

Nobody could come close to Heather in the run

Pentathlon performance director for GB Jan Bartu
Fell and Katy Livingston, who won the first World Cup event of the season in Cairo but finished 33rd at Millfield, are in pole position for selection.

But they face competition from Athens bronze medallist Georgina Harland, who finished seventh at Millfield, Mhairi Spence (15th) and Lindsey Weedon (20th).

Fell suffered a series of injuries after winning the 2003 World Junior Championships.

But she achieved the Olympic qualifying standard for Beijing by winning silver at last year's European Championships, and won her other World Cup medal - a bronze - in Moscow last May.

She shot a personal best at Millfield, swam her best time of the year and completed one of only two clear rounds in the riding.

"I had a bit of a shocker in the run in the semi-final on Friday," she said.

"I felt quite heavy and I only just made it into the final, which knocked my confidence a bit. I was excited just to be in the top 36, so to win it is brilliant."
