Weale claims bronze in World Cup

Modern Pentathlon

Britain's Sam Weale produced a superb performance to come away with a bronze medal at the Pentathlon World Cup.

Fellow Nick Woodbridge finished eighth at the event at Millfield in Somerset.

No British male has competed in the event at the Olympics since Richard Phelps in 1996, but Woodbridge and Weale are in contention for Beijing.

"I'm delighted to get on the podium, especially with the high standard of competition - I hope this is the first of many medals," said Weale.

"I've been up and down with injuries in the last few years, but I feel as though I've improved a lot this year - and this is definitely a step forward for me."

At the end of 12 hours of competition across the five modern pentathlon disciplines, the medals finally came down to a 3km run in torrential rain.

Weale went into the race in fourth and - after a tough race - finished it third.
