Liverpool super-heavyweight David Price will captain Great Britain's boxing team at the Beijing Olympics.

The 25-year-old was given the role after a vote was carried out by his fellow boxers.

Price told BBC Radio Merseyside the accolade was even more special as his team-mates had made the decision.

"It shows the lads respect me and I think I'll be good as a leader, it shows they trust me and I'll try and help them whenever I can," he said.

Price takes over the captaincy from his good friend and long-time England boxer Neil Perkins.

And he has spoken to the Kirkdale welterweight about his new role.

"He was a good figure to look up to. I can take a few of his good sides and obviously bring in a couple of my own," Price added.

"I'm not going to be running around like a policeman chasing after the lads.

"I'll just try and help them out and help us as a team."

Price's first duty will be to lead the team at the European Union Senior Championships, which get under way in Poland on Saturday.
