Hoang Anh Tuan's schools - Vietnam

World Class 2012 in partnership with the British Council bring you the stories of the schools where the dreams begin.

Hoang Anh Tuan

Hoang Anh Tuan is a Vietnamese weightlifter who won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and a gold medal at the Asian Championships.

He was named Vietnam's Sportsman of the Year in 2008.

Tuan went to primary school in Bac Ninh province in northern Vietnam.

Whilst at school, Tuan also helped out with his mother's butchers shop.

The school is proud of its former pupil's Olympic success. The weightlifter keeps the school updated with his news and visits his former teachers when he's back in his home town.

His success has inspired current students to work hard and some have Olympic dreams of their own.

Badminton is the school's most popular sport and the team have won competitions throughout northern Vietnam.

Like Tuan, many of the Dong Quang's 300 students need to earn money whilst at school to help support their families.

Tuan is fondly remembered as an enthusiastic and popular pupil who was committed to his training but never missed any school activities.

In 1999, aged 15, he left school to concentrate on weightlifting.

Keep checking back to find out about Tuan's school days and more about the Dong Quang 2 Lower Secondary School.

World Olympic Dreams

Tuan is one of the athletes being tracked as London 2012 approaches and they strive to make their Olympic dreams a reality.
