Great Britain's Olympic curlers beaten by Canada

GB curlers crack under Canadian pressure

Britain's hopes of qualifying for the men's curling semi-finals hang in the balance following a 7-6 loss to Canada, their third defeat of the Olympics.

GB's men had beaten the hosts in their four previous meetings including a World championship victory against them in April of last year.

But Canada triumphed when they earned two points in the final end of an enthralling match to remain unbeaten.

Earlier GB's men had claimed a confidence-boosting 9-4 win over China.

Defeat against Canada left GB in joint fifth place in the table and they will now realistically have to win all three of their remaining matches to progress.

In a fascinating battle David Murdoch's men fought back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 and then led again at 4-3 and 6-5 with Canada holding the hammer for the final end. And with that advantage the home favourites produced the goods to take the game.

"We had a great chance in the 10th there," said Murdoch.

"Unfortunately we were a little short with it. ... It's a bit concerning.

"That means every game's a must-win now for us to finish 6-3.

"There's been a lot of media attention on the fact that we beat them the last four times but that win was more important for us. We're now in a tricky situation."

Murdoch's team have one game on Sunday, against the United States (2200 GMT).

Meanwhile, GB's women also suffered defeat, beaten 6-5 by the United States on Saturday.

GB curlers too strong for China (UK only)

It was the third defeat of the Olympics for Eve Muirhead's team, leaving them fourth in the table.

Although a semi-final spot remains within reach, they may have to win their remaining three games to progress.

The defeat was even harder to take considering GB had led 3-0 before being pegged back by their opponents at 3-3 and were in front again at 5-3.

But the Americans held on and despite chances for Muirhead to win the match for GB in the 10th and extra end, it was the US who emerged victorious.

"We were in control of that whole game there and a few slack shots from myself let the whole team down," said Muirhead, 19.

"One up playing the last we couldn't ask more, we had an opportunity to win it then and even again in the extra end."

Muirhead's experienced team-mate Jackie Lockhart added: "That was a gut wrenching loss, especially for Eve and it will be difficult for her to take but we are all behind her 100%."
