Paralympian Sean Rose wins World Cup downhill race

British Paralympic skier Sean Rose
Rose is set to compete in his second Paralympics next month

Paralympic skier Sean Rose created history with Britain's first gold medal in a World Cup race after winning the downhill event in Sestriere.

Rose finished almost a second ahead of Japan's Akira Kano to give him a boost ahead of the Vancouver Paralympics.

"The last few days of training have been amazing and put me in a great frame of mind for racing," he said.

"My run was fantastic until six gates from the finish. I ran too straight and just hung on over the final rise."

The 38-year-old from Cambridge, who competes in the sit-ski category after breaking his back in a skiing accident in 2000, has enjoyed a successful season so far with three podium finishes in last month's European Cup races in Austria.

He was delighted to overcome some tricky conditions on the 2006 Paralympic course to claim his maiden World Cup success.

"The cloud came in causing flat light and made changes in the course difficult to see," he admitted.

"The snow must have softened and a few competitors crashed out in the ruts. I sat at the top contemplating it all for more than an hour throughout the delays between skiers.

"But my skis ran fast - that is down to having a ski technician working with us, which is a real advantage and hearing the national anthem for the first time at the World Cup prize giving was a fantastic experience."

The GB team's head coach, Jane Stevens added: "Sean had some promising training runs leading up to the race. While many athletes had difficulty on the challenging course, he remained calm and stayed focused with the gold medal in sight."

Rose will now hope for more success in the second downhill race on Thursday, as well as the Super G races on Friday and Saturday.
