James Goddard picked up Britain's first gold at the European Short-Course Championships in Croatia as he dominated the 200m individual medley.

He led from the start and sliced more than 1.5 seconds off his best time to win in one minute 53.46 seconds.

Jemma Lowe, who was sixth in the 100m butterfly at the Olympics in Beijing, won a bronze over 200m.

Hannah Miley again lowered the British record for the 200m individual medley but could only finish fourth.

Miley, 19, had set a new best of 2:08.69 in qualifying for the finals and despite knocking another 0.38 off she was unable to get amongst the medals.

Goddard, who was sixth in Beijing, outlined his plans to get closer to American duo Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.

He said: "I'm really chuffed with that. It's a big PB for me.

"You see what Phelps can do and Lochte and all those guys, it's just a wake-up call. You can't mess about. If you want to be close to them you've got to have four amazing strokes."

Lizzie Simmonds, who was sixth in the 200m backstroke in Beijing, lowered her previous British best at 100m to 57.85 seconds in the day's first session.

France's Amaury Leveaux set a new world record in the 50m freestyle with a mark of 20.48, while Italy's men's relay team set a new world best of 1:32.91 in the 4x50m medley.
