Jaguar's optimism after their big strides last year faded during 2004, and now the Big Cat's F1 dream in over.

Jaguar announced on 17 September that it was to pull its team out of F1 after the current season at the behest of American parent company Ford.

Things might have been different if the Milton Keynes-based outfit had been able to build on its 2003 performances.

But lead driver Mark Webber obviously saw the writing on the wall when he decided to join Williams for 2005.

Despite his stirling efforts, Jaguar's flashes of speed this season have been overshadowed by poor reliability and a shortage of funds to put things right.

Australian Webber is seen as a future world champion by many within F1 and his progress with Williams will be watched with interest.

The same cannot be said of his team-mate this season Christian Klien

The Austrian has not lived up to Jaguar's claims of his talent, even though his sponsorship money from soft drinks company Red Bull was a welcome boost.

Now he and test driver Bjorn Wirdheim of Sweden will find themselves looking for new employers following the final race of the year in Brazil.

The team may yet be resurrected by new owners, with Jaguar keen to sell its F1 operation.

But whatever happens, the famous British marque's short-lived involvement in motorsport's elite competition will end in Sao Paulo in October.
