0900: It's time to sign off. It has been some day. Hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for your company during the early hours over this weekend and for all of your messages, they have really kept me going. Stay tuned for the rest of the BBC One coverage and the F1 Forum. There's a re-run of the race on BBC One at 1310 BST if you fancy going through it all again while all of the reaction will be on the BBC Sport website during the day. 0854: There's a great exchange between Horner and the BBC telly team in the pit lane. Horner says to presenter Lee McKenzie that he is glad to see her instead of Jake Humphrey and Eddie Jordan tells the Red Bull boss not to be such a creep. Horner quickly responds and says to Eddie: "My grandmother says that she fancies you too." There's no way back from that is there?

0849: Lewis Hamilton is pretty downbeat afterwards, not surprising really considering the weekend he has had. "I am just so happy to finish the race, it is my first finish for a long time," he tells the BBC. The mood at Red Bull is a little different. "A dream day for the team," says team boss Christian Horner.

Mercedes GP on Twitter: "Nico is absolutely fine... he's back with us in the garage."

0845: Anthem and champagne time on the podium. It is worth noting that the top three seemed very subdued just before they came out onto the stage. That's what Suzuka does to you.

BBC F1 analyst Martin Brundle: "What a performance from Red Bull and their drivers. It was a brilliant drive from Vettel. Mark Webber will be just as happy as him though. He'll be delighted with second. Webber's lead is more than it was when he came here."

0841: Here's a quick summary of how it finished. Webber was second, Alonso third, with the McLarens of Button and Hamilton following on behind. Schumacher was sixth, Kobayashi seventh.

0837: "Yes! That's what I am talking about. Thank you. It's fantastic. I know you didn't get a lot of sleep last night and you might not tonight but enjoy this. This is our circuit and I am so proud to be a part of this team," Vettel tells his team. Do you think he's happy?

0835: You know that bit I said about Vettel setting the fastest lap, well Webber has the last laugh by claiming that honour. A 1:33.474 on lap 53. I am sure the Aussie will allow himself a wry grin at that. The race victory is all Vettel's though - it's his third of the year. He was simply superb this weekend and it repeats the Japanese GP victory he had in 2009.


Lap 51: Vettel loves setting the fastest lap at every race and it looks like he might do it again. Easy street. He posts a 1:33.653. Apologies for any loss in the coverage by the way, if you refresh this page everything should be dandy.

Lap 49: Kobayashi is loving this. He's overtaken the Williams of Barrichello and is all over Heidfeld. He's my new favourite. He does pass his Sauber team-mate and is up to seventh.

BBC F1 analyst Anthony Davidson: "It's a failure for Rosberg. That's a very strange situation. The left-rear wheel came off the back of the car."

Lap 48: Oooh, big off for Nico Rosberg. It looks like a failure of some kind. He smashes into the barriers at Turn Five, which is in the Esses. Yellow flag.

Lap 46: Button sets the fastest lap of 1:33.889, we lost pictures there for a while. Not sure what is happening. No worries though, the Red Bulls are walking it.

Lap 45: Brundle is not a happy chappy. He calls Jaime Alguersuari "stupid" for not letting Kobayashi a clear line when the Sauber driver has clearly overtaken him coming out of the Hairpin. The two cars touch wheels but they are able to carry on. Kobayashi is now 10th. And now there's smoke coming out of the back of Adrian Sutil's engine, he limps to the pits while spewing oil engine over the racing like through 130R. Which is nice.

Lap 44: And so it passes, Button takes Hamilton at the Hairpin for fourth.

Lap 42: Alonso, in third, is quicker than second placed Webber on that lap. Button has really closed the gap on Hamilton, it's 2.2 seconds now while Hamilton is over 10 seconds off Alonso. "It's a matter now of which McLaren driver finishes fourth," says Brundle.

Lap 40: As Hamilton tells his team that he has lost third gear, Button sets the fastest time of 1:34.205. This really has been a bad weekend for Hamilton so far. "Lewis will have to double shift now," says Martin Brundle. "This is a big drama for him. Button will be on his tail and it might be worth Lewis letting him through to have a go at Alonso."

Lap 39: And, as predicted, Button comes back out in fifth. Vettel leads from Webber and the German sets the fastest lap of 1:34.715.

Lap 38: Here we go then... Button pits.

Lap 36: Hamilton is closing the gap to Alonso now - it's 2.2 seconds . Vettel has closed down to Button to 1.3 seconds. "You sense that Red Bull are just waiting to pounce," says BBC F1 commentator Jonathan Legard.

Lap 35: Right then, Button leads Vettel by 1.5 seconds - and the Briton is yet to stop. Webber is 1.9 seconds off Vettel. Alonso in fourth is 2.9 seconds clear of Alonso as Hamilton sets the fastest lap of 1:35.182. Meanwhile, Alonso gets a move on from his team. Rather you than me. Alonso's race engineer Andrea Stella tells him: "Vettel is not very quick at the moment so I think if we pick up the pace, we see if they respond." Alonso replies: "I need a traffic-free lap."

BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz: "There is grim acceptance on the McLaren pit wall that it has not really worked out for Button. He has not been able to do the lap times he needed to get that gap. The track has evolved quicker than we thought it would and it's done for Button's pace."

BBC F1 analyst Martin Brundle: "The soft tyres hung on too well at the start. It's not paid off for Button. The Red Bulls are catching him at a second a lap. Will McLaren use Button to arrest the Red Bull charge?"

Lap 30: It's spicy at the front. Alonso is quicker on the harder tyres than the Red Bulls and Webber is faster than Vettel. Button is leading and needs to increase the gap over Alonso and Hamilton if he is to keep ahead of them after his stop. Doesn't look likely now though. He isn't pulling away.

Lap 27: Great defensive work from Rosberg at the first corner to defend his place. This is superb. Schumacher's race engineer Andrew Shovlin tells his driver: "There are no team orders but Nico knows to be sensible if you make a move."

Lap 26: And Hamilton improves that time to a 1:35.563. "That is enough to cover Button when he pits," says Brundle. "This race is coming alive." Meanwhile, there's a great battle between Mercedes team-mates Schumacher and Rosberg for eighth. They are very close coming through 130R, it is taking my breath away.

Lap 25: That has really freed up Hamilton and he immediately sets a 1:35.675.

Lap 25: That's what Hamilton is all about. He gets into the Kobayashi slipstream down the pit straight and takes the Sauber man for sixth into the first corner. Great move. Webber pits.

Lap 24: Vettel now comes in, as does Alonso. Webber carries on. Schumacher was in at the end of lap 23 and Brundle notes that the Mercedes stop cleared the way for Red Bull to come in.

Lap 23: Hamilton pits at the end of lap 22 and comes out... behind Kobayashi. That didn't work out so well then. The Sauber man is on the harder tyres and will not need to come in for a while presumably. "Lewis needed clear air," says Brundle.

Lap 20: Vettel is 2.3 seconds clear of Webber. Barrichello pits. Ted Kravitz says that Sutil's stop was the trigger for Rubens, and in turn that will lead to Hamilton coming in shortly.

BBC pit-lane reporter Holly Samos: "Both McLaren drivers were complaining that their brakes were overheating when they were behind the safety car, and Lewis is now complaining about his front tyres."

Lap 18: Kobayashi, or Kobaybashi as Brundle calls him, takes Sutil on the inside of the Hairpin. Sutil pits. Elsewhere, it has just been announced that the stewards are looking into the incidents between Massa and Hulkenberg as well as Petrov and Liuzzi. That will be fun and games after the race.

BBC F1 analyst Anthony Davidson on BBC Radio 5 live: "Lewis Hamilton is not enjoying the front end of that McLaren as he would do if he was in cleaner air. He's probably just taking a breather now, as there's no way he's going to get past Jenson - he won't make a mistake. Lewis is just going to have to be patient, for now."

Lap 16: As Martin Brundle points out, Alonso sets a time quicker than Webber for the first time in the race. Are the Red Bull boys easing off just a little?

Lap 15: Alonso is being gradually dropped - he's 4.6 seconds adrift in third. When are they going to start coming in?

BBC F1 analyst Martin Brundle: "I am be pretty sure that if Lewis was ahead of Button then he would be quicker but he is in the dirty air. That's the way it works out and that gearbox issue has caused a problem for him."

Lap 13: This is a walk in the park for Red Bull. Vettel leads Webber by 2.1 seconds, who in turn is 3.7 seconds clear of Alonso. Button, in fourth, increases his lead over Hamilton to one second.

BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz: "A headache for McLaren is how to manage Lewis Hamilton. He is on the softer tyres and should be closer to Alonso's pace but he is stuck behind Button."

Renault's Robert Kubica on his retirement: "We managed a good start but then in the second lap, when I was behind the safety car, I nearly lost the car. I [initially] thought it was the drive shaft, like at Siverstone. It was difficult to follow the safety car so I moved to the side and then lost the wheel."

Lap 10: Now it's Webber's turn to set the fastest lap - a 1:36.926. He was over half a second quicker than Alonso on that lap. Hamilton is tracking Button for fourth - that gap is 0.6 seconds. Remember Button is on the harder tyres.

BBC Radio 5 live analyst Anthony Davidson: "That must have been a small mistake from Rubens - don't forget he's got a good car underneath him. But it was a good move from Schumacher also."

Lap eight: These Red Bulls are looking very strong. Alonso, in third, is 1.8 seconds off Webber already while Vettel leads by over a second after setting a fastest lap of 1:37.527. BBC F1 commentator Jonathan Legard speculates that Alonso is simply racing for third.

Lap seven: And we are off again. Rosberg tries to overtake Buemi on the outside of 130R. That is very, very brave. He runs wide but manages to keep going although he doesn't make the move stick. Wow. Schumacher overtakes former team-mate Barrichello at the final chicane. Vettel leads by 0.9 seconds.

Lap six: McLaren tell Hamilton over the team radio: "At this pace the brakes are too hot. Do everything you can to keep the brakes cool. Jenson is reporting the same problem." The safety car is coming in at the end of this lap, we will be racing soon.

BBC Radio 5 live analyst Anthony Davidson on Kubica's lost wheel: "That's quite ridiculous."

Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi: "I had a really great start, I had passed five or six cars before the first car. But then I saw Felipe coming like a rocket into my side. I don't think he can take the blame as I don't think he had control of the car."

Lap four: We've now seen a replay of Kubica's car just before it stopped. It didn't have a right rear wheel! Incredible. The five championship contenders are now in the top five places in the race. Vettel from Webber, Alonso, Button and Hamilton. This is going to be a cracker. Elsewhere, Button complains of vibration in his brakes.

Lap three: And there's another retirement. Kubica's Renault grinds to halt. His race is over now too. "Robert has been mighty around here and he was going to play a major part in this race and in the championship battle," says BBC F1 analyst Martin Brundle.

Lap two: It seems Massa went over the inside kerb at Turn One and then takes the front wing off Hulkenberg. Petrov swerves left down the pit straight and takes out Liuzzi. Crikey. Alonso is fourth, then it is Button and Hamilton. Safety car still deployed.

Lap one: Nico Hulkenberg and Vitantonio Liuzzi are also out. Haven't seen a replay of the start yet. Bedlam. Rosberg and Trulli into the pits.

Lap one: Wow. What a mess. Vitaly Petrov spins off and into the wall down the pit lane. Kubica is up to second. Massa in the gravel. Safety car.

0702: The cars are all lining up - 53 laps are set to begin. Any second now.

Virgin Racing's Lucas di Grassi on his crash during the warm up: "We actually don't know what happened. We were preparing the car as normal, there was nothing unusual, and at that point I just lost control. There was nothing I could do. I am glad that I am safe."

0659: Here we go then. The formation lap. Apparently Massa and Kobayashi are on the harder tyre. Mercedes boss Ross Brawn says the crossover point for the softer compound tyres will be between 10 and 12 laps. How are you feeling?

0654: Pole sitter Seb Vettel was also collared on the grid and he's relaxed too. What is it about these guys? He doesn't really get a handle on Coulthard's Scottish accent and after an opening question about the race Vettel says: "Before the start? I though you said before dessert David! Should be a good one. Weather is nice, we start from pole."

Virgin Racing team boss John Booth on Lucas di Grassi: "We got no radio message from him but he walked away and didn't seem injured. We'll keep analysing the telemetry until the race starts. Nothing showed up, but it's not 100% at the moment. There was no obvious mistake from the telemetry. He's OK. That's the main thing."

0651: Our intrepid duo of Martin Brundle and David Coulthard wait for a while to grab a quick interview with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who starts fourth behind the Red Bulls and Renault's Robert Kubica. He spends quite a bit of time speaking with his engineers but eventually comes over. He says: "Obviously third would be good for us. The first two positions should be the Red Bulls. They are looking very dominant here. There are some concerns about the start - we did two starts at the ends of the pits with some strange results, so we're looking at that."

0644: Brundle and Coulthard grab a word with Jenson Button, who is cool as you like. He says: "We made a good call on the tyres and the weather's good for us. Everyone might be lucky with their tyres, but I doubt it. I've got to get past Kubica and Alonso if I want to win. I am looking forward to it."

Michael Schumacher, who lines up in 10th place, gives a rare interview on the grid to Martin Brundle and David Coulthard: "It would have been possible to go further forward but we had a technical issue with our F-duct which unfortunately worked in the wrong areas. We have to live with it. But we weren't expecting to be too strong here, so for that fact it has gone pretty well."

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt at Suzuka: "Sorry you're still waiting for your Ferrari pants Orlo. It's very expensive here. I was almost lured in by a Suzuka 2010 tote bag for my shopping but my skinflint nature wouldn't allow me to handover £11!"
And I would like out that the lovely Holty was kind enough to get my two sons some Ferrari pens from Monza. What a star.

0636: Crikey, there's a Virgin Racing car in the barriers. Lucas di Grassi, on a formation lap, goes a little wide at 130R and smashes into the tyre wall. That car is wrecked and his race is over. Anyway, it's the Brundle gridwalk. Coulthard joins him. Goody.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Suzuka: "It seems strange to think that in just two weeks' time we will be in Korea for the inaugural grand prix. The track has been completed, with the final layer of asphalt now down, and the FIA's final inspection is due to take place on Monday. The Yeongam circuit had been given the hurry up after F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said the situation was 'not good' at the last race in Singapore. More new pictures of the grandstand and pit buildings have winged their wing from Korea to help ease any final doubts about the circuit's readiness. A recce to Korea by members of the BBC technical team also gave a positive impression of the circuit's progress."

0627: The championship title race is certainly on a knife edge. Webber is on 202 points and is leading Alonso by just 11 points, with Lewis Hamilton in third. Vettel is one point further adrift and Jenson Button is on 177 points. Just 25 points separates the top five drivers in the championship, the exact same number you get for a race victory. It's close. Very close.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Suzuka: "Lewis Hamilton has described this grand prix as 'one of the worst weekends' so far after he crashed in first practice and then had to suck up a five-place grid penalty for changing a gearbox, which was damaged in his crash with Mark Webber in Singapore. There is a feeling that Hamilton could weave his way through to a podium from eighth on the grid. His old pal Fernando Alonso will also be looking to move forwards from fourth. Alonso reignited his title push by winning the last two races. Ferrari's man says his first challenge is to get past Robert Kubica, who lines up ahead of him in third. That might not be as easy as Alonso thinks as the Renault has good race pace."

0621: Jenson Button is the only one of the leading contenders who qualified on the harder compound tyre, so expect a long first stint from the defending world champion. Eddie Jordan suggests to McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh that his body language hinted that Jenson went against team orders in making that decision. The quick-witted Whitmarsh responds by saying: "You have proved Eddie that you can't read body language."

0617: TV gold from Eddie Jordan on BBC One. He is talking with Coulthard about Hamilton starting from eighth on the grid and he asks: "Will Lewis go bonsai from the start?" Hmm, not sure Lewis likes small trees.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Suzuka: "Even with a late gearbox change, it wasn't all work and no play for Lewis Hamilton. The 25-year-old, who lines up in eighth on the grid, booked half the lanes of the circuit's bowling alley for a McLaren Saturday night out in Suzuka and this photo from McLaren's Twitter page shows Hamilton taking tips from team boss Martin Whitmarsh. I hear a good evening was had by all but no word on who actually won the contest."

BBC F1 pundit David Coulthard: "If you look at the top 10, there is only seven tenths between them so it shows that the rest of the field is closing the gap. I actually think Red Bull are a little bit surprised there is not a bigger gap. It's not like in Hungary where the gap was massive. Red Bull are at the front and that's a good place to start. It's unlikely they can be beaten in this race."

0608: So what are your predictions for the race then? I think I started off with Alonso but that seems like a long time ago now so I'm now going for Webber. That's allowed I think. Vettel is emerging as the favourite with the bleary-eyed F1 team here although one rogue colleague is plumping for Alonso. That's just madness.

BBC F1 pundit David Coulthard: "The drivers will like qualifying and racing on the same day. I certainly enjoyed it. I have been talking to a few of the drivers and they all seem pretty relaxed."

Lucy in London via text: "Well the sheer excitement and nerves for one of my favourite circuits has been enough to keep me up till now. Bribed a flatmate to do me pancakes for brekkie too. This is definitely a good Sunday. Transmitting good vibes (and pancakes?) to Lewis and Jenson!"

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Suzuka: "Hello again. You might remember me from qualifying this morning. How brilliant is it to have the race just four hours after the grid positions were decided? It might be double the work for everybody but it does mean the drivers can make good on their qualifying result - or make amends - while the adrenalin is still pumping. The teams may have less time to work on the cars but one thing in their favour is that the track won't have evolved too much from qualifying so they will have a good idea of the racing conditions."

0554: In case you were doing something silly like sleeping in the early hours of this morning, here's a quick summary of what happened in qualifying. Red Bull continued their dominance this weekend by locking out the front row for the seventh time this season. Sebastian Vettel starts on pole for the eighth time this campaign, with championship leader Mark Webber alongside him. Lewis Hamilton was third fastest but will start from eighth after a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox. Renault's Robert Kubica will start from third, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso joining him on the second row. McLaren's Jenson Button is with Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg on the third row. Oh, and Ferrari's Felipe Massa failed to make it out of Q2. Think that's it.

BBC F1 commentator Jonathan Legard on Twitter: "Lewis Hamilton given a three wheeled bubble car ride for drivers parade. Enjoyed it so much he took a photo of it on his phone."

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Suzuka: "Martin Brundle had already warned that the fans' zone in Suzuka was 'a sea of humanity' today but even that terrifying description didn't prepare me as I ventured out. It is fair to say I have seen some sights and felt some elbows as the enthusiastic fans in Japan jostled around the merchandise and food stands dressed in the bright colours of the team uniforms. Kamui Kobayashi's stall was doing a brisk trade in teddy bears, cookies, caps and key-rings - even though it was pretty pricey. The Ayrton Senna adoration - as I mentioned in a Suzuka blog - saw some classic black-and-gold Lotus clothing on display as well as some very odd plastic bears decked out in his old racesuit colours. The good news is that I have survived. Phew."
I'm still waiting for my Ferrari pants, Sarah! My wife isn't though, which is disappointing.

Hope the alarm wasn't too horrific at this early hour and that you resisted the urge to lob it out of the window. I can see blue sky in Japan and the stage is set for round 16 of this year's championship. Nervous?
