British Grand Prix: Hamilton optimistic over upgrade

Hamilton happy with second place

Lewis Hamilton believes upgrades planned for the next grand prix could give McLaren the extra speed to increase their lead over Red Bull.

McLaren abandoned a major upgrade before the British Grand Prix but Hamilton and Jenson Button drove superbly to finish second and fourth.

Hamilton, who leads team-mate Button in the championship title race, said: "Today was about damage limitation.

"Hopefully when we get the upgrade it should spring us out front."

McLaren lead Red Bull by 29 points in the constructors' standings going into the next race in Hockenheim, Germany on 23 July.

And Hamilton said: "I did say we would probably be half a second or four tenths slower than the Red Bulls in pure pace, but the great thing was I was able to challenge Mark in the first few steps of the race and that felt good.

After a hugely challenging weekend for the Woking-based team, both Hamilton and Button were clearly encouraged by the amount of points they were able to score.

"I don't think it is a miracle result, it is a result of all the hard work, a reflection of all the hard work the team put in," said Hamilton.

"We did the best job we could with the package we had, and I guess we are still leading constructors, so it is a great result for the guys. We moved forward, that was the most important thing."

Hamilton acknowledged he had no answer to Webber's speed around the reconfigured Silverstone circuit.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh delighted with points haul

"The Red Bulls and Mark did a phenomenal job," he said. "Those guys are so fast I wouldn't be able to out-pace them.

"In the first couple of laps it looked like he was struggling, and I thought I had a chance to get past, but we both struggled. No chance though, I was flat out but he was edging away."

Button, who had been disconsolate after qualifying only 14th fastest on Saturday, was similarly happy with his afternoon's work.

"I'm still making it difficult for myself, but that was a great race," said Button.

"It's so difficult to overtake out there, so I knew I had to make a big amount of places up the first lap, I made six places up, and then we made the right call with pitting late, had to push really hard on the option tyre, and it worked out well for us.

Button delighted with first-lap charge

"To be second and fourth as a team is great. I'm still second in the championship, the only pain is my team-mate has pulled away a bit, so I'll try and get him in the next one.

"When the car was heavy it felt really good, there was a clot of weight in the rear end and it was more planted. But when the car was lighter I really struggled with rear instability.

"It wasn't quite as bad as it was in qualifying, but I still struggled in the race, even though the circuit grip is very high, so I want to know why that is, we'll look at the data. Pity I couldn't get on the podium in front of home crowd."

McLaren's pre-race problems centred on the team's attempt to introduce a 'blown diffuser' on to the car, intended to increase downforce and, consequently, cornering speed.

However the new part had to be removed overnight on Friday after it caused parts of the bodywork to overheat, and made the car unstable to drive.

Engineering director Paddy Lowe confirmed the diffuser would be re-introduced at the next race in Hockenheim, Germany, in two weeks time.
