Ferrari dominated qualifying at the United States Grand Prix with Michael Schumacher leading Felipe Massa to lock out the front row at Indianapolis.

The German was in imperious form as he set a time of one minute 10.832 seconds, to beat Massa by 0.603secs.

The Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella was third, with team-mate and championship leader Fernando Alonso fifth behind the Honda of Rubens Barrichello.

BMW Sauber's Jacques Villeneuve was sixth ahead of Jenson Button's Honda.

Button was encouraged by the pace shown by the Hondas a week after a poor race in Canada.

It shows that when the package works we can be very strong

"I'm really happy with my position," he said.

"The car is certainly competitive and I enjoyed the qualifying session.

"For sure the race will be tough and we have to keep pushing hard because we have some tough competition behind us on the grid.

"My aim now is to push for a good points finish and I think we have the car to do that. I'm looking forward to the race."

Toyota's Ralf Schumacher was give something to smile about at Indianapolis after qualifying in eighth on the track where heavy accidents have seen him hospitalised in his last two visits.

But it was more qualifying disappointment for Juan Pablo Montoya who missed the final-session cut by a tiny margin.

The Colombian was forced to settle for 11th after running out of time for his final flying lap, but McLaren team-mate Kimi Raikkonen claimed ninth.

Scott Speed, who will become the first American to race in a United States Grand Prix since 1989, also missed that cut finishing 13th on the grid.

But Midland's Christijan Albers and Tiago Monteiro managed a season-best in qualifying of 14th and 15th respectively.

Takuma Sato also surprised on Saturday, giving Super Aguri their best-ever performance with 18th in his four-year old chassis.

However, Scotsman David Coulthard missed the cut in first qualifying and had to settle for 17th in his Red Bull, while Toyota's Jarno Trulli was relegated to 20th.

Saturdays' qualifying brought Alonso's run of five consecutive pole positions to an end on a track where the Spaniard has never finished a Grand Prix.

But it was the 67th pole for Schumacher, who trails Alonso by 25 points in the driver standings.

The 37-year-old German said: "We've been very strong all year long, but I was very surprised by the amount.

"It shows that when the package works we can be very strong. We have suffered in past but here works very well."
