1356: Rubens Barrichello leaps into second after a fantastic lap of 1:23.242 but Honda team-mate Jenson Button pulls off his own sensational time of 1:22.988 to move above the Brazilian as Honda break up Ferrari's dominance.

1355: Felipe Massa and Michael Schumacher look in control at Imola, reasserting their positions on Ferrari's home track.

1351: Jenson Button is first to make a quick time with 1.24.159 but it is doubtful he will stay on provisional pole for long.

1345: The drivers are still trying to burn off fuel, but Michael Schumacher still surges to the top of the standings with 1:26.751. He leads a Ferrari one-two with Massa on 1:26.997.

1340: The final session begins with the top 10 drivers going for pole position. For the first few minutes, the drivers will be burning off fuel before trying to clinch the fastest time.

1335: The second knockout stage finishes with Giancarlo Fisichella, Jacques Villeneuve, Nico Rosberg, David Coulthard, Nick Heidfeld and Vitantonio Luizzi missing the cut and having to settle for places 11-16 on the grid.

1330: It is disappointment for Nick Heidfeld, who crashes out of contention at the Rivazza. But Michael Schumacher breaks the 1:23-mark to lead the standings.

1320: The second session gets under way with just 16 cars vying for pole position.

1315: Christian Klien, Scott Speed, Tiago Monteiro, Christijan Albers, Takuma Sato and Yuji Ide are all knocked out after the first session.

1230: With 30 minutes to go before the start of qualifying, the air temperature is 26C. The weather is dry and sunny with humidity of 35%.

Michael Schumacher will be looking to challenge Renault's dominance after notching up the fastest time in Saturday morning practice at Ferrari's home track.

The German clocked one minute 23.787 seconds in Saturday's last practice, beating Fernando Alonso's Renault by 0.281secs.

He is closing in on a new record for pole positions at the track where Ayrton Senna was killed 12 years ago, having already equalled the Brazilian's mark of 65.

Alonso's team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella, who is chasing his second victory this season after winning the Malaysian Grand Prix, was third.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa was fourth, followed by McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, with Jenson Button's Honda seventh.
