Coulthard criticises BAR
Marshalls attend to Giancarlo Fisichella's Sauber in Monaco
David Coulthard branded the BAR team ""naive" after Takuma Sato's engine failure triggered the crash which put the Scot out of the Monaco Grand Prix.

"Sato's engine was smoking on the parade lap and it is too risky to go around Monaco like that," he said.

"The professional thing would be not to race and it is just an example that BAR are a young team.

"I'm really disappointed and upset as I love this race and would have enjoyed battling it out with the other guys."

The smoke generated by Sato's blown Honda engine on lap three caused the drivers behind him to slow down.

Coulthard's McLaren was hit from behind by the Sauber of Giancarlo Fisichella, which flipped over, ending both drivers' races.

The crash was one of three major incidents in an eventful race.

"Obviously I was very worried when Fisichella flew over me and his car landed upside down - we were lucky not to have a more serious accident," said Coulthard.

"When Sato's engine blew up I couldn't see anything in front of me because of the smoke, so perhaps Fisichella was going a bit too fast but I don't know.

"However, smoke was coming from Sato's car already on the parade lap so I'm sure the engineers could have seen the telemetry that eventually the engine would blow up."

The car took all the impact and I stayed in the cockpit until it all went quiet outside

Fisichella was disappointed at missing out on the chance to fight for his best result of the season. His team-mate Felipe Massa finished fifth.

"I made a good start and was just driving gently, saving the tyres, when Sato's engine exploded," said Fisichella.

"I'd seen it smoking after the second start but nobody expected it to break like that. I had no vision at all.

"Rubens Barrichello and Juan Pablo Montoya were in front and then suddenly there was a McLaren.

"I'm not sure why it was there, but the next thing I heard was the bang and I was upside down.

"The car took all the impact and I stayed in the cockpit until it all went quiet outside, just in case the accident wasn't finished, then I got myself out.

"I'm okay but very frustrated because for sure we could have had fourth place."
