Major incidents (All times BST):

1300: Michael Schumacher enjoys the luxury of finishing his final qualifying lap knowing he has already sealed his first ever pole position at Spa - and his fifth of the year.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen maintains his front-row spot with Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello third and Ralf Schumacher outqualifying Williams team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya to take fourth.

David Coulthard is sixth fastest in the McLaren, Jarno Trulli seventh for Renault and Jaguar's Eddie Irvine eighth.

Toyota's Mika Salo pushes Renault's Jenson Button back into 10th.

1300: McLaren's David Coulthard briefly snatches fifth place from Juan Pablo Montoya right at the end but Montoya hits straight back in the Williams to secure fifth on the grid.

1259: As the clock runs down, Ralf Schumacher misses out on third by 0.01 of a second.

1258: Rubens Barrichello's late attempt is disrupted by the presence of Minardi's Anthony Davidson as all 20 cars take to the track for their final flying laps.

1256: With four minutes of the session to go Rubens Barrichello takes to the track in his Ferrari in a last-ditch bid to snatch a place on the front row.

1253: Renault's Jarno Trulli fails to mount a late charge and stays seventh.

1250: Juan Pablo Montoya's disappointing session continues as he fails to improve on his fifth place in the Williams.

Jacques Villeneuve spins his BAR off the track.

1249: Michael Schumacher hammers home his superiority with another brilliant lap in the Ferrari, improving his time to 1:43.726.

1248: McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen fails to improve on his second place after a ragged flying lap.

1246: Kimi Raikkonen is first out again for his third run, looking to make up a deficit of 0.299 seconds on leader Michael Schumacher.

Raikkonen's McLaren is followed out by a stream of other cars.

1243: There is a lull as the drivers wait for the debris from Giancarlo Fisichella's crash to be cleared before going out for their third run of the session.

Jaguar are having a good session, with Pedro de la Rosa ninth fastest and team-mate Eddie Irvine 10th.

1240: Jarno Trulli moves ahead of Renault team-mate Jenson Button to go seventh.

Giancarlo Fisichella spins his Jordan into the gravel and shunts into the tyre wall.

1237: Juan Pablo Montoya improves his position from 10th to fifth in the Williams, pushing David Coulthard down to sixth.

1235: Kimi Raikkonen finds his flying lap dramatically disruped by a huge cloud of smoke caused by an engine failure to Olivier Panis' BAR Honda.

Raikkonen improves his time to 1:44.293 but it is not fast enough to knock Michael Schumacher off top spot.

1234: Renault's Jenson Button, 13th fastest on his first run, improves to sixth on his second run with a lap of 1:46.049.

1229: Michael Schumacher eclipses Kimi Raikkonen's time with a lap of 1:43.994secs to take provisional pole for Ferrari.

1224: David Coulthard's first lap is more than a second slower than that of his McLaren team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

1222: McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, who was fastest in the morning's practice session, takes to the track.

A great middle sector gives him a time of 1:44.741, one tenth of a second faster than his practice time.

1219: Mark Webber is first out in his Minardi, clocking one minute 48.528 seconds on his opening flying lap.

1210: The teams are taking their time to prepare, with no one yet out on the track.

There is the prospect of rain during the session as dark clouds loom overhead.

1200: Qualifying is under way, with world champion Michael Schumacher favourite to take pole position for Ferrari.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen set the fastest time in the final practice session before qualifying.

Schumacher was second fastest - he spun after setting a first sector time quicker than Raikkonen's.
