Zanardi makes low-key start
Alex Zanardi
Zanardi has high expectations
Alex Zanardi finished a disappointing ninth in the opening race of the 2004 European Touring Car Championship.

Driving a modified BMW car, the Italian lost a place from his grid position as Brazilian Augusto Farfus won at Monza.

The 37-year-old then came 10th in the second race, a full 22.7 seconds behind German winner Jorg Muller.

Zanardi, a former Formula One driver, lost both of his legs in a racing accident three years ago, but made his competitive return last October.

He has decided to drive for the full year with BMW and admitted before the season-opener that he was targeting overall victory in the 10-round championship.
