Taylor dents Rusedski record
Taylor Dent serves at 144-mph, but Greg Rusedski still holds the record
American Taylor Dent is out of Wimbledon, but has managed to leave his mark on the tournament.

Dent notched up the fastest serve of the championship so far in his dramatic five-set defeat by fifth seed Lleyton Hewitt on Thursday.

The 20-year-old had already wowed the crowd with a 142mph serve in the fourth set tie-breaker before clocking another at 144mph.

Although Britain's Greg Rusedski still holds the all-time record at 149mph, his position as tennis' biggest server could be under threat from Dent.

1. Greg Rusedski - 149
2. Taylor Dent - 144
3. Andy Roddick - 141
4. Julian Alonzo - 140
The American qualifier's powerful effort on Thursday put him second in the leaderboard of all-time fastest servers.

Dent also shares the accolade of being only one of four players to reach the 140mph mark.

Another American rising star Andy Roddick managed 141mph at the Ericsson Open earlier this year while Julian Alonzo reached 140mph at Long Island in 1997.

Rusedski, who remains one of the game's fastest servers, grabbed the record at the semi-finals of the Tennis Masters Series in Indian Wells in 1998.

But it remains to be seen whether the Briton can repeat the feat or challenge Dent's record at Wimbledon.

Finding consistency

Rusedski has had a major overhaul of his game, including his serve, over the last year.

His success this season speaks volumes for his re-modelled game, but it does not mean he is serving faster.

So far Rusedski is second in the speed of serve rankings at Wimbledon with a respectable 139mph.

But Dent, ranked only 143rd, is clearly a player to watch out for and has been touted along with fellow American Roddick as a future star.

2. Greg Rusedski - 139
3. Andy Roddick - 136
3. Marat Safin - 136
1. Serena Williams - 119
2. Elena Baltacha - 118
3. Venus Williams - 116
4. Alicia Molik - 114

The American qualifier slammed 21 aces against accomplished returner Hewitt, but is still struggling to harness his tremendous power.

Dent foot-faulted 18 times and repeatedly let his long shots sail into the stands.

As he is learning, it is not always the speed of the serve, but its quality and consistency that matters.

It is a lesson that Rusedski has appeared to have got under wraps with 41 aces from two matches, compared with Dent's 33.

Clearly the young American has a bright future, but has yet to realise that power is no good if it is not harnessed in the right way.

Until then, Rusedski will have no worries.
