Third round Monty watch
Colin Montgomerie
Montgomerie led the field by two at halfway
All the action, hole-by-hole, from Colin Montgomerie's third round in The Open at Lytham.

Hole one: Monty gets off to a bad start when he finally tees off at 1515BST, hitting his opening iron shot into a bunker on the left of the green. But the Scot redeems himself with a wonderful chip from the sand, rolling the ball to within inches of the hole. He makes par, much to the delight of the watching crowd.

Hole two Monty's second tee shot is also less than impressive but he misses the dangerous bunkers. His second shot, hit solidly, easily finds the green. He can't convert his birdie putt, unlike playing partner Pierre Fulke, but it's another par.

Hole three As Fulke and Clarke join Monty on seven under and the pressure grows, Monty's iron shot from the tee is almost perfect. His second initially finds the green but then bounces and rolls just off it leaving him with a difficult task. He skims it up the bank, just missing the hole, and gets a par.

Hole four After finding the edge of the fairway with his opening shot, Monty is left with 162 yards to the hole but his ball pops into another bunker to the left of the green. Again, he plays a good bunker shot but misses his par putt to drop his first shot of the day.

Hole five The par three is well suited to Monty and he hits a perfect shot to give him a chance of making amends for his dropped shot at the previous hole. His putt looks good before it strikes the lip of the hole and drifts past so Monty must be content with another par and another chance goes by.

Hole six Monty uses the driver and it pays dividends as he finds the fairway. His second lands just off the green but he avoids the bunkers and puts himself on the green in three. Yet again, his birdie putt hits the hole and doesn't drop. Another par for Monty as he remains in a large group on six under.

Hole seven The second par five in a row and a poor tee shot for Monty. It just misses the bunker in the rough but it is still in a nasty spot. He opts for a wedge and gets it back onto the fairway. His third just misses a bunker off the green and falls to the back of the green. His attempt for a birdie falls short and he must be content with another par as he sees his name fall further down the leaderboard.

Hole eight A two iron down the middle of the fairway eventually leads to another birdie putt for Monty but yet again it misses the hole. He can't put away a tricky par putt and drops another shot after being in contention for a birdie.

Hole nine With Monty desperately needing to pick up some shots, he hits a good tee shot onto the green but yet again, it's another par as he reaches the turn and his chances of winning look less likely than at the start of the day.

Hole ten Yet again, Monty hits a good tee shot and his second shot reaches the green to give him a chance of a birdie and things finally go Monty's way as he holes it to give him a huge confidence boost

Hole eleven Monty's tee shot finds the fairway safely. His second shot bounces awkwardly and rests just off the green at the last par five hole of the day but he recovers superbly and claims a second birdie in a row to move back into joint second place.

Hole twelve A good tee shot at the par three sets up a reasonable birdie chance which Monty can't quite convert but he putts in for his par.
Seven under

Hole thirteen It's certainly unlucky thirteen for Monty. The wind is in his face at the 13th tee and disaster strikes with a disappointing tee shot which goes into a bunker. Delicately balanced, it takes him two shots to get it out of the bunker and it still leaves him with over 100 yards to the pin. He just about manages to find the green with his fourth shot and ends up with a double bogey six.

Hole fourteen Monty needs to recover well and he does, finding the green in two and although he can't get a birdie, he gets another par. However with the leaders dropping shots, he is still not totally out of contention.

Hole fifteen A good drive off the tee and his second is just off the green. Monty chips well onto the green and gives the crowd a moment of concern before securing his par.

Hole sixteen Monty continues solidly as he tries not to drop any more shots before the end of his round. His birdie putt looks good before stopping short just a couple of inches shy of the hole and it's another par.
Five under

Hole seventeen Monty thinks long and hard before his tee shot which comes to rest just off the fairway. As the wind picks up, he shows his class and comfortably reaches the green. He can't produce a moment of magic but his par means he is just one stroke behind the leading group.
Five under

Hole eighteen Monty starts his final hole with a long drive off the tee and a solid second shot gives him yet another chance for a birdie. He fails to hole a 13 foot putt in front of an expectant crowd but his 73 keeps him on five under par, just one shot behind the four joint leaders going into the final day's play.
