Second round Tiger watch
Tiger Woods waits with the caddies on the first tee in round two
Waiting game: Woods (centre) on the first tee
All the action, hole by hole, in Tiger Woods' second round in The Open at Lytham.

Hole one:
Woods, who is level par after the first round, tees off at 13:47 BST, along with Argentina's Angel Cabrera and Frenchman Thomas Levet. The par-three first was one of Woods' few birdies in the first round. This time he finds the left-hand side of the green with his tee shot - but he is some 30 feet from the pin. His approach putt finishes 18 inches short and he taps in for par.

Hole two:
Woods reaches the green in regulation at this 437-yard par four. He has a 15-foot putt for birdie - but his putter has so far failed to fire and the ball again pulls up short. Another par.

Hole three:
Still adopting a conservative approach to the challenge of links golf, Woods takes an iron off the tee. It pays off as he finds the centre of the fairway. His second shot flies 200 yards to centre of the green. But he mis-reads the slope on his 20-foot putt and has to hole from three feet for par.

Hole four:
After another iron reaches the fairway safely, his approach shot is on line with the pin - but it comes up about 30 feet short. His birdie putt has the perfect length, but is slightly off line and he claims a four.
Level par

Hole five:
Woods' tee shot at this 212-yard par three slices off to the right. His ball misses the green and ends up bouncing into a group of spectators. His short game is proving very resilient, though, and he pitches from the gallery to two feet for a three.
Level par

Hole six:
This par-five is a hole that Woods knows he has to pick up shots on if he is to mount a charge. He takes a wood off the tee - but his drive flies into the rough on the right. It matters little, though, because an amazing recovery shot from the long grass bounds onto the green, setting up an eagle chance. He misses the 15-footer, but pops in the birdie putt.

Hole seven:
Woods now looks like he means business and he launches a huge drive at the start of this par-five. His hopes of an eagle are blown when his second shot strays off line and lands in a bunker to the right of the green. He plays out to 18 feet - and punches the air in delight when he holes the putt for a second successive birdie.
Two under par

Hole eight:
Woods plays for position with an iron off the tee and sets up a 12-foot birdie chance with his second. But this time he misses and takes a par four.
Two under par

Hole nine:
An eight iron to the middle of the green gives him another opportunity to pick up a shot. His putter is still not firing, though, and he has to settle for a par three.
Two under par

Hole 10:
A long iron off the tee provides perfect position on this short par-four. But his wedge is over-hit and the ball flies 25 feet past the target. He gets down in two to stay on course.
Two under par

Hole 11:
A 300-yard drive gives him the chance to reach the green in two at this 542-yard par-five. His second looks to be heading for the putting surface, only to trickle into a green-side bunker. But his sand play is sublime and he strokes the ball to three feet and knocks in the birdie putt. He has now picked up shots at all three par-fives.
Three under par

Hole 12:
Woods looks to fade the ball into the hole at this par-three - but he turns the club head over and the ball flashes into a bunker at the back of the green. For once he fails to produce a classic bunker shot and leaves the ball 12 feet short. But he holds his nerve - and holes the par putt.
Three under par

Hole 13:
Just three shots off the pace, Tiger is now sharpening his claws. A precise tee shot sends him on his way and a sweet wedge sees the ball spin back to within 15 feet of the hole. But the putt lacks pace and he misses the chance to move within two of leader Colin Montgomerie.
Three under par

Hole 14:
A rare stray shot for the world number one sees him hit the deep rough on this tough hole. But he is hugely fortunate with the lie, as the ball rests on grass trampled down by spectators - and he is able to fire a wedge onto the green. He is still 30 feet from the pin - but he sends a wonderful putt unerringly into the hole. As the rain starts to fall, he is now just two shots behind...
Four under par

Hole 15:
Woods' tee shot flirts with two bunkers on the left of the fairway and lands in a divot. He fluffs his second shot into heavy rough, then tries to hack the ball out - only to end up in a greenside bunker. Another fine sand shot takes the ball to four feet and he holes for a bogey. With Montgomerie moving to eight under, he is suddenly five shots behind.
Three under par

Hole 16:
A neat iron off the tee is followed by a loose sand wedge to 25 feet. The birdie putt slips off to the right and he makes par.
Three under par

Hole 17:
Woods negotiates this dogleg hole with no hiccups, a solid approach taking him to the middle of the green. A 35-foot birdie putt stops inches short of the hole.
Three under par

Hole 18:
Woods gets his driver out of the bag for one final Friday fling. It proves a risky option, though, as the ball careers into the heavy rough. Again he is somewhat fortunate with the lie and he is able to smack a great recovery shot to the back of the green. A 30-foot birdie putt never looks like sinking, so he settles for par and a fine round of 68.
Three under par
