Elite Men's race

Morocco's Abdelkader El Mouaziz clinched his second success in three years winning in his fastest ever time of 2:07:11. Debutant Paul Tergat of Kenya was second and defending champion Antonio Pinto from Portugal third. The first Briton home was Mark Steinle in sixth place.

Elite women's race

Another winner's medal for Ethiopian Derartu Tulu
Derartu Tulu celebrates with her medal

Twice Olympic 10,000 metres champion Derartu Tulu powered away in the final minutes to finish ahead of Russia's Svetlana Zakharova and Joyce Chepchumba of Kenya in a time of 2:23:56. Last year's winner, Tegla Loroupe struggled with a hamstring problem before finishing sixth.

Wheelchair races

Tony Blair congratulates Dennis Lemeunir and Tanni Grey Thompson

Tanni Grey-Thompson claimed a fifth women's title with a comfortable victory, despite the problem of a slow puncture which hampered her progress. Frenchman Dennis Lemeunir caused a surprise in the men's race beating last year's British winner Kevin Papworth.

Fun runners

Some people can't get through the Marathon in anything other than fancy dress
It's all smiles for these Marathon competitors

But for many other runners, it's the taking part that matters as they bid to make it around the course. Britain's greatest Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave was the official starter and in his first marathon completed the course in just under five hours.
