GB men lose World Cup qualifying opener to Romania

Great Britain's men slipped to a battling defeat to Romania in their opening match in the World Cup qualifying tournament in Finland.

After a slow start GB trailed 21-11 at half-time, but rallied as the game ended 36-27 to Romania.

Sebastian Prieto top scored for GB with six goals, while Jesper Parker impressed in goal, making 14 saves.

The British men face Bosnia on Saturday and then finish their campaign against hosts Finland on Sunday.

The GB team have never won a competitive match, but have targeted the match against Finland as one where they could break their duck.

And assistant coach Bill Baillie was encouraged by the display against Romania.

"We're happy with the result, but we were still disappointed because we had done a thorough analysis on Romania," said Baillie.

"The first-half wasn't good. The lads looked nervous, but after half-time they looked a different team and played well, and at one point we fought back to just three down and really had the Romanians on the rack.

"Technical errors let us down once again, but we've arrived on the international scene now and we're learning from every game."
