Howell happy with Augusta start
David Howell
England's David Howell said he had hoped to card an under-par score before his round of 72 on a rain-hit day one at the Masters.

But the 29-year-old Ryder Cup star, making his debut at Augusta, was still happy with his first 18 holes.

"I would have liked to have broken par but 72 is a pretty good start for my first Masters," he said.

"It was breezy, squelchy underfoot, the 10th is playing very long. Also, it is never ideal waiting around to start."

Howell was the second player to tee off from the first hole, finding the middle of the fairway with ease.

And after his round, he said: "I hit a beautiful shot at the first, I wasn't nervous at all.

"It's a strange game. Some places you are nervous on the first tee but today of all days, I wasn't, there's no explanation really."

Countryman Paul Casey had a nightmare day in comparison after taking 10 shots at the par-five 13th to finish his round with a seven-over par 79.

Looking back at the 13th, he said: "I was a bit quick on the drive and hit into the ditch, but the biggest mistake was with my second (attempt).

"My caddie said it was downwind and I backed off, then we agreed it (the wind) was across, but we were wrong.

"It wasn't a bad shot, a miscalculation was the best way of putting it, then I compounded it."
