Bad news for the vendors outside the Augusta National's gates hoping to cash in on the women's membership row.

Spectators, or patrons as they are known here, are reminded in the local newspaper's Masters Guide: "Augusta National requests that patrons avoid wearing apparel, including hats, buttons, pins or similar items, expressing an opinon - pro or con - on any political or social issue."

South African Tim Clark might have felt a little left out in his practice fourball on Tuesday.

American partner Pat Perez seemed perfectly at ease with the conversation in Spanish being offered by opponents Sergio Garcia and British Amateur champion Alejandro Larrazabal.

Garcia, though, speaks English to his ball. He was heard imploring it to "go, go" as his tee shot at the par-three sixth came up short of the pin.

The best-seller in the souvenir stores at Augusta this week?

Masters umbrellas retailing at $39. There are plenty of $15 sun visors left.

It takes more than a bit of rain to put off a tough Aussie.

Peter Lonard's response to Monday's washout was to consult the Yellow Pages. Moments later one of the world's most consistent players was on his way to Wedges and Woods, the only covered driving-range in the area.

While the world waits to see if Tiger Woods can win an unprecedented third Green Jacket, one record has been made before a ball has been struck.

The US Mid-Amateur champion is stockbroker George Zahringer, and at 49 he is the oldest first-time Masters entrant.
