Benn Barham happy with tour comeback after cancer op

Kent golfer Benn Barham says he was pleased with how he played on his return from cancer surgery.

Barham tied for 63rd place at the Kenya Open on his come back after six months out following an operation to remove a kidney tumour.

"I had slight pains down my right side, it's still numb where the scar is but nothing that affected my golf swing really," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"My energy levels were great so I'm kind of pleased with how it went."

He added: "I rested a lot during the week, I didn't overdo it practice-wise.

"But I played 18 holes everyday from Monday until Sunday so I really put myself through it.

"Once I was out there I didn't really want to back off and take it too easy."

Barham did not earn enough money to retain his place on the European Tour last season, so he is playing be on the Challenge Tour this year.

He is hopeful he may still get invites for the main tour, although he is not ready for it yet.

"I did ask for some invites in the last couple of weeks but I wasn't successful," said Barham.

"I got close and I got some nice letters back.

"The next two weeks are in the Far East and I'm just a little apprehensive of going that far.

"My game's clearly not where I want it to be, so it's a bit of a big ask to go the other side of the world and expect to compete."
