Young Amy Boulden has been tipped as a rising star of British golf

Amy Boulden will become one of the youngest British players to play in the British Open after the Welsh teenager qualified for this week's major.

The 16-year-old amateur came through final qualifying after hitting a 73 to claim one of the 17 places at Southport for the Royal Birkdale showpiece.

The North Walian will go head-to-head with golf's stars Laura Davies, Paula Creamer and world number one Jiyai Sin.

Boulden joins fellow Welsh player Becky Brewerton in the major near Liverpool.

Solheim Cup star Brewerton, who lives just a few miles from Boulden on the north Wales coast, is the main Welsh hope at the British Open but the world number 124 will have a tough task against golf's top stars.

While Boulden, the Llandudno player, has been earmarked as one of the golf stars of the future and qualifying for her first major will give the Welsh international and 2008 Welsh Girls champion an early taste of playing alongside the world's top players.

"This is a major step forward for Amy in every sense of the word," said Nigel Edwards, the Golf Union of Wales director of player development and coaching.

"It is a considerable achievement for her to get through final qualifying, there are a lot of very good and experienced professionals who did not manage that.

"However the experience she will gain this week will be priceless, getting to play in one of the biggest events in women's golf and also getting to see the world's best players at first hand."
