Donald storms up rankings with stunning finish

Luke Donald made another impressive move up the field on the final day of The Open as he fired a closing 69 to finish tied for 11th at St Andrews.

Just as he made a big move over the weekend last year to tie fifth at Turnberry, Donald narrowly avoided a missed cut to post back-to-back 69s.

"So far, the Majors have been slightly disappointing for me," said Donald.

"But my Open record was miserable at start of my career and I'm at least heading the right direction."

And, after missing the cut at the Masters and finishing down the field at the US Open last month, American-based Ryder Cup contender Donald can return to the States for next month's WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Akron and the USPGA at Whistling Straits with renewed confidence.

I didn't play well Thursday or Friday but I've come back well over the weekend

"I played with Tiger Woods on the final day when I finished tied for third in the USPGA at Medinah on the Sunday and that's as close as I've ever been.

"That's the closest I've been and I need to improve on that," the Hemel Hempstead-born 32-year-old said.

"But this week has also been good for Ryder Cup points.

"I would love to make the team again," admitted Donald, who was on the winning team in 2004 and 2006, but who missed out through injury at Valhalla in 2008.

"It's always my goal at the start of year and it's going to be tough to get in as a lot players are playing well and the guys on the fringes.

"But I'd like to make it as an automatic selection and not have to rely on being one of Colin Montgomerie's picks and that finish will have helped a lot."

After tailing his round with impressive birdies at 17 and 18, Donald said: "I didn't play well Thursday or Friday but I've come back well over the weekend.

"And I think I could have sold that finish for quite a few pounds to anyone in the last two groups.

"It's such a tricky hole at 17 but I managed to get it right this time, and then it went well on 18 as well. I'm chuffed with that."
