Weather plays havoc in Valderrama

Padraig Harrington shelters from the rain
Harrington was one of the few players who made it on to the course

Heavy rain meant that less than four hours' play was possible on day two of the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

Leaders Soren Kjeldsen and Sergio Garcia were among 10 players who did not even manage to start their round before play was abandoned.

Defending champion Justin Rose was one of those who did play a full round but must have wished he did not, failing to break 80 for the second successive day.

He then withdraw after being told of the death of his grandfather.

Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez's hopes of success in the Order of Merit suffered a serious blow as he dropped seven strokes in the first four holes before the suspension of play came.

He had to win the tournament in Spain to have any chance of claiming the money list title, so that race is effectively down to three now - Sweden's Robert Karlsson, Englishman Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington of Ireland.

"It got worse and worse and it was unfair because who knows what conditions are going to be like tomorrow?" said Jimenez.

"I think maybe the decision (to suspend play) should have been taken before. The ball was picking up mud."

Order of Merit leader Karlsson was three over after four holes and Harrington five over after 13, while Westwood had yet to resume on one under.

With the weather forecast for the rest of the weekend no better, it could mean that the last-ever staging of the tournament will have to be cut to 54 or even 36 holes.
