US Ryder Cup team - Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson
Age: 38
Caps: 6 (1995, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006)
Ryder Cup record: W9 L12 H4

"Lefty" possesses a brilliant short game and utilises great imagination to scramble out of danger when tee shots go awry.

The world number two has won three majors - the 2004 and 2006 Masters and the 2005 USPGA - and has claimed two PGA Tour titles this year.

However, his Ryder Cup record is less than impressive for a player of his stature. He took just half a point from a possible five two years ago at the K Club.

Mickelson himself believes he wasn't fit enough to play 36 holes a day last time out, and has since lost weight and built up his stamina.

It is worth noting, also, that some of his worst Cup performances have come alongside Tiger Woods, with whom he has a somewhat fractious relationship.

With Woods out injured, will Mickelson find the freedom to become the team's leader and inspire them to victory?
