Bristol's Chris Wood has targeted being the highest-placed amateur at next week's Open at Royal Birkdale, after battling through final qualifying.

"Winning the silver medal is an aim of mine," he told BBC Radio Bristol. "To be at the closing ceremony with the winner would be a great honour.

"I can't wait to walk down the 18th. Me and my dad took a look and it's amazing with all the stands."

Wood, 20, just missed out on qualifying for the Open at Hoylake two years ago.

"I missed by a couple of shots and I was so disappointed then," he said. "But to do it this year is amazing."

Apparently I'm 300-1 to win it, so that's got to be worth a tenner

Last week Wood, who plays at Long Ashton, in the west of Bristol, was playing for England in the European Championships where he finished fourth in the individual event. He is hoping his appearance at the Open will continue his path towards turning professional.

"Hopefully next year I will play in the Walker Cup, which is the peak of the amateur game," he said. "A few of my friends have just turned pro and it's great to see those guys doing so well. It gives you a lot of confidence."

Wood is keen not to appear star-struck, although he admits he is looking forward to competing against the world's greatest golfers, minus Tiger Woods.

"Unfortunately Tiger is not going to be there," he said. "But we were eating in a restaurant on Monday night and Phil Mickelson walked in! I can't wait to be in amongst it.

"Apparently I'm 300 to 1 to win it, so that's got to be worth a tenner."
