Johnstone celebrates his Jersey Open triumph

Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone has won the Jersey Seniors Classic, finishing two shots clear on three-under-par.

It is the 52-year-old's first win since being told he would never play golf again after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2004.

"I don't think ecstatic even comes close," the victorious Johnstone told BBC Radio Jersey.

"I really can't remember a win in my career that gave me more pleasure than this, it's just a wonderful feeling."

I think the victory gives MS sufferers hope, that's my goal

Winner Tony Johnstone

The Zimbabwean finished two strokes ahead of a group of four players: Englishman Gordon Brand, Ross Drummond from Scotland, Birtus Smit from South Africa and Paraguay's Angel Franco.

He fought back the tears when he collected the trophy, his first win since the Qatar Masters in 2001.

The triumph completes a remarkable recovery for Johnstone, who has been undergoing revolutionary treatment in his battle against MS - the condition that affects the central nervous system.

It has taken him two year's to relearn large parts of his game, including completely overhauling his putting technique to use his left hand, after the disease severely affected his co-ordination.

Johnstone added: "I think it gives MS sufferers hope, that's my goal.

"I got very lucky and got on a clinical trial for a new drug, and I thinks it's important for other MS sufferers, we've got 100,000 in the UK and I think this flies the flag."
