McIlroy cards 73 in third round

Rory McIlroy was pleased with the way he finished his round
Teenage star Rory McIlroy carded a two-over-par 73 in his third round at the Open Championship at Carnoustie.

The 18-year-old from Holywood near Belfast, already assured of the silver medal for best amateur, had four bogeys and two birdies to leave him four over.

Dubliners Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley are both in contention in tied third on three under after posting rounds of 68.

The pair are six behind leader Sergio Garcia of Spain.

McIlroy is not content with being the top amateur at the Open after setting his eyes on a top-10 finish.

"I want to play in this next year and the easiest way to do that is to finish in the top 10 this week," said the 18-year-old Northern Irishman, who was the only one of the field's six amateurs to make the cut.

"That's what my mindset was going out and just trying to play my best golf.

"If I can shoot something in the 60s in the final round like Chris DiMarco did on Saturday I have to be in with a chance of a top 10 finish which would get me into next year's Open."

McIlroy was not entirely happy with his game and he will need to cut down on the mistakes which held him back in the Carnoustie drizzle.

He made a bogey at the fourth then dropped another three shots before a birdie at the 12th and another at the 14th kick-started his round once again.

"I struggled again around the middle part of the round - the middle five or six holes I didn't play particularly well," he admitted.

"I lost my confidence a bit and was getting down on myself. But I made a birdie on 12 and that got me going again.

"But I got off to pretty nice start and I finished really well, two under for my last seven holes.

"I'm really happy with the way I putted. I worked on that on Friday afternoon and it was really good today.

"Overall, I'm happy enough and, if I can go out on Sunday and shoot something in the 60s, I'll be really happy."
