Poulter climbs into US Open mix
Ian Poulter
Poulter has improved with every round at Winged Foot
Ian Poulter double-bogeyed the last at Winged Foot but remains well in contention for a first major title.

The 30-year-old Englishman had an excellent chance to post the round of the day - and match the round of the week - but made a mess of the 18th.

His approach was a yard too short and rolled down the slope off the green.

He then repeated the error with a chip shot before missing a 12ft putt to card a double and a level-par 70 that kept him at five over, three off the lead.

"If I evaluate the whole round I've played awesome," said Poulter.

Three shots is nothing, it's right in there with a shout

Ian Poulter
"I hit a lot of fairways and good spots on the greens to have some birdie putts.

"On the last I was a yard from perfection, I hit the shot I wanted and it was a yard short. I'm hitting it great and feel good and that's the main thing.

"A lot of European players are up there and it's not going to be long before one of us manages to win a major.

"Three shots is nothing, it's right in there with a shout and I'm not going to be that far away."

Poulter is not the only English golfer who can be pleased with his efforts at Winged Foot so far this week.

That world number 11 Luke Donald is also in contention should not be that surprising but the presence of Philip Archer - playing in his first ever major at the age of 34 - in the top 20 at the US Open is remarkable.

Without a win on the main European circuit, Archer is enjoying the best season of his career. Only last month he narrowly missed a birdie putt for the first ever 59 on the European Tour.
