Irish Open goes to additional day
Darren Clarke
Northern Ireland's Clarke leads by two shots at Carton House
Darren Clarke will take a two-shot lead into the rain-delayed final round of the Irish Open on Monday.

Officials finally abandoned play at the Colin Montgomerie-designed course at 1515 BST on Sunday and said it would start again at 0915 BST on Monday.

Northern Ireland's Clarke, who is six under after eight holes, leads from Swede Peter Hedblom and Britons Paul Casey and Ross Fisher.

Dane Thomas Bjorn and Britain's Anthony Wall are a further stroke behind.

In the event of more bad weather, the tournament could still be reduced to 54 holes with a play-off taking place between third-round leaders Casey, Bjorn and Wall.

It was getting very difficult to find a place to take relief from casual water
European Tour referee Andy McFee

Tournament director David Probyn admitted the decision - taken because of heavy waterlogging on the Carton House course - was not universally popular.

"I heard a couple of 'good decisions', and saw a few shakes of heads," said Probyn.

"Everyone has a different perspective depending on their position in the tournament.

"A couple of people have spoken to me about withdrawing. There is a fine in the (rule) book, but whether that would be applied I can't say.

"There is a very strong feeling that some of the guys want to finish this in style tomorrow morning."

European Tour senior referee Andy McFee added: "We had one and a half hours of rain that was pretty intense and while the greens were perfect, the problem was the fairways, and particularly the sixth, eighth, 11th and 14th.

"It was getting very difficult to find a place to take relief from casual water."
