Saltman secures the Silver Medal
Saltman carded a final round of 71
A birdie at the 18th gave Lloyd Saltman the Silver Medal as leading amateur at the Open Championship.

The 19-year-old had earlier been set a target of four under par by his fellow Scot Eric Ramsay.

Three birdies and three bogeys meant he went up the last needing a birdie, which he subsequently got for a 71.

"Coming up the last was a great feeling. I saw Eric had shot four under so I knew what I had to do. I'm absolutely delighted," he said.

But Saltman insists he has no plans to turn professional in the near future.

"I am not going to change any plans. I am looking forward to the Walker Cup and it may be another two years before I turn pro," he said.

"The Walker Cup is my main goal, but winning the medal at the home of golf is a fantastic bonus for me. You have got to enjoy people watching and cheering you on."

Ramsay had felt that his score might have been good enough to take the Silver Medal.

"There was a good crowd to spur me on and this week's taught me about playing under pressure in front of big crowds," he added.

"It has been the best experience of my life. It has been good fun."

Ramsay had five birdies and one bogey in his final round, which matched his first round 68.

Sandy Lyle, meanwhile, finished a shot further back on three under par for the championship after a disappointing final round of 75.

Lyle's eventful last 18 included six bogeys and three birdies.
