Colin Montgomerie won the Hong Kong Open in dramatic fashion after James Kingston double-bogeyed the 18th.

Montgomerie finished on nine-under-par after a final round 70 with Kingston a shot ahead playing the final hole.

But the South African, who bogeyed the last in 2004 to hand the title to Miguel Angel Jimenez, saw two shots go as Monty sealed his 30th European win.

Kingston bogeyed 16 but Montgomerie missed birdies at the final two holes and seemed to have missed his chance.

Kingston's tee shot on the last flew into the trees and he then a missed 10-foot putt on the last cost him the chance of being involved in a play-off.

He had to be content with a share of second spot alongside KJ Choi, Keng-chi Lin, Thammanoon Srirot and Edward Loar.

Overnight leader Simon Yates slipped away after a double-bogey on the first and carded a four-over-par 75 which also included a triple-bogey on the 14th.

Montgomerie was full of sympathy for 40-year-old Kingston, who is yet to land a European title.

"We all feel for him. Every golfer who plays the game feels for someone who doubles the last to lose," Montgomerie said.

"That should have been a play-off at worst to be honest and then we would have had more drama coming down that last hole."

A disconsolate Kingston lamented: "Obviously I'm disappointed. Obviously I was aware of the situation. I was just so nervous."
