US retain Curtis Cup
Michelle Wie
Michelle Wie helped the United States retain the Curtis Cup on Sunday when she inspired them to a 10-8 victory over Great Britain & Ireland.

Wie, just 14, beat Nicola Timmins 6&5 to put the US, without a player over 22 years old, 7-6 ahead at Formby.

Elizabeth Janangelo's 1-up singles win over Shelley McKevitt then sealed an unassailable 9-7 lead.

Annie Thurman wrapped up the win when she edged Danielle Masters in the last singles match of the day, 1-up.

The home side won two of three alternate shots on Sunday morning to tie it up at 6-6.

Wie and Janangelo then lost to Claire Coughlan and Anne Laing 3&2 when Coughlan holed the winning downhill putt from six feet on the 16th green.

The US pair started well with birdies at the first and third holes, but they made bogeys to lose the next three and never recovered.

Coughlan and Laing won three successive holes from the 10th and though Wie and Janangelo won the 15th, it ended on the next green.

It feels great to have beaten Michelle again
Claire Coughlan
"I played lights out," said Wie. "I hit the fairways, didn't miss the greens much. I played really well."

Coughlan took consolation from her result and was delighted to inflict another defeat upon Wie.

"It feels great to have beaten Michelle again," she said. "She's up and coming and no doubt going to be number one in the world, so it's a great feeling.

"On the last putt, I just told myself to pick the line and go with the line. Putting is generally the best part of my game."

But her joy was short-lived.

Paula Creamer won her singles but Jane Park lost before Janangelo's victory over McKevitt effectively ended home hopes.

Emma Duggleby, GB & Ireland's 32-year-old veteran, scored her third victory as she and McKevitt beat Erica Blasberg and Sarah Huarte 2&1.

Thurman and Brittany Lang led from the second hole as they beat Timmins and Danielle Masters 5&4.

A win by GB & Ireland would have seen Europe add another cup to its already impressive haul of Ryder, Solheim and Walker Cup silverware.
