Faldo defends women invites
Nick Faldo
Nick Faldo has insisted that women should be allowed to play in men's events as long as they can compete.

Greg Norman and Ernie Els voiced their objections after Laura Davies entered next week's ANZ Championship, with Els saying he could not see a future in it.

But Faldo said: "The bottom line is that if they are good enough to come out and play, fine.

"It is probably good for the game. We've got something to talk about other than Tiger [Woods]."

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam became the first woman in 58 years to enter a PGA Tour Event in 2003 and Michelle Wie, 14, played in last month's Sony Open.

Norman has called on the game's administrators to come up with a rule to outlaw it.

But Faldo said: "There will be never-ending questions whether it is good or bad for the game," said Faldo.

"Tiger [Woods] has gone quiet. Actually, it is probably good for the game. We've got something to talk about other than Tiger.

"I don't think there is suddenly going to be an invasion of a dozen [women] at an event."

Faldo said he had been impressed by Wie, who narrowly failed to become the first female player to make the cut in a men's PGA Tour event.

"I thought Michelle's performance was incredible," he said.

"To be able to handle that at 14 was quite astonishing with the media and all that attention."

Britain's former world number one Davies will become the first woman to play in an Australasian or European men's tour event when she tees it up at the ANZ Championship near Sydney next week.
